Answers to some frequently asked questions
Here are some answers to some commonly-asked questions. Feel free to ask if you have any more!
How many lessons will I need?
The DVSA does not currently require a minimum number of driving lessons but some research shows that the average learner requires 45 hours of professional driving lessons combined with 22 hours of private practice to reach test standard.
Most of my learners WITH a car to practice at home start with a block of six 90-minute lessons, either weekly or more frequently. That is usually enough to start practicing safely and confidently with parents for the weeks or months waiting until a test date. Then most learners have another block of six lessons prior to the test date - ideally practicing on test routes in the relevant test centre area. (Total ±18 hours)
Most of my learners WITHOUT access to a car to practice between lessons usually require three or more blocks of six lessons before passing their driving test. (Total ±27-42 hours)
Many of my learners pass with only one block of lessons - but every individual is different and it very much depends on what they feel they need - and when it is safe and realistic for them, potentially, to start driving alone having passed a driving test.
How can I book a test?
Before you can book a Practical Test you will first need to pass your Theory Test. You should do this as soon as possible.
The rules for booking the Practical Test have changed recently and you will now need to book your driving test yourself via the official website. Once you have succeeded in booking a test date there are a few services which may be able to help you swap your test to a different date with another learner.
Which test centre should I book my test?
I can be most help with practice on test routes in Guildford, Tolworth or Chertsey. Recent rule changes mean you will be limited in where you can change your test to so it’s advisable to book reasonably locally. I will consider driving tests in my car further afield but at an extra cost.
Can I take the test in my own car?
Yes, with a few exceptions, you can take the test in your own car. About half of my learners take the test in their own car but many prefer to take it in a dual controls car. If you do decide to use your own car here is a checklist which might help!
I’m ready to take my test. Can I have a lesson in my own car?
Yes, providing I agree that you are test-ready and that you have your own comprehensive motor insurance.
Can I change my lessons after they’ve been paid for?
Yes, as per my Terms & Conditions, providing you give at least 48 hours prior notice. Rescheduling will be subject to my availability.
I have a driver license from another country. Can you help me pass the UK driving test?
Yes, I have helped many drivers from other countries to pass.
I have a neurodivergent learner. Can you teach them to drive?
I have taught several neurodivergent learners to drive without issue, though they often require significantly more time to reach test-readiness. I would be grateful if you could give me some idea in advance of starting lessons.
